The short version
No accounts, no tracking, no audio through our servers. SoundAlong moves the minimum of metadata needed to keep a Jam in sync, and forgets it when the room ends.
What leaves your device, and only while you use it
- During a Jam: the current track’s public metadata (SoundCloud link, title, artist, artwork link, duration), playback position and play/pause state, plus the display name you chose. This goes to the Jam server (jam.denzi.dev, Cloudflare) and to the other people in your room. Rooms expire automatically (at the latest after 12 hours, or 5 minutes empty) and all room data is deleted with them.
- With Discord Presence enabled: the same track metadata and timing goes to the Discord app running on your own computer. It never passes through SoundAlong servers. Discord then shows it according to your Discord privacy settings.
What never leaves your device
- Audio. Every listener streams directly from SoundCloud with their own session.
- Your SoundCloud account, cookies, or credentials. SoundAlong never reads them.
- Listening history. Nothing is stored server-side beyond the live room state.
The extension itself
The extension contains no analytics and requests the minimum permissions: access to soundcloud.com (to read the player and add the Jam button), this site (to hand over invites), the Jam server, and (only if you use Presence) native messaging to the local companion. This website uses Vercel Analytics with an opt-out (localStorage.setItem('va-disable', '1')).
Boundaries we keep
SoundAlong does not bypass advertisements, subscriptions, or regional restrictions. If a track will not play for a participant, SoundAlong says so instead of working around it. For reliably uninterrupted Jams an ad-free SoundCloud subscription helps, but it is not required to use SoundAlong.
